Matala is located 70 km southwest of Heraklion, at the point where the fertile plain of Messara meets the Asterousia Mountains. It is one of the most popular destinations in Crete and certainly the most famous beach of southern Heraklion. The area’s most famous attraction is the caves carved into the rock, north of the beach.
In the caves of Matala, hippies found their paradise in the 60s and 70s who came to live here, and among them there were several celebrities.
